Bath Storefront Project: 1 Saville Row

Day 2:
Moving in, transferring materials and works in progress into the space, setting up a studio situation
Spent some time this morning learning a bit more about 1 Saville Row. At various times it has been home to an animation company, an antiques dealer, a magazine office, a space for site-specific works by various artists...
I used the time today to test out some ideas I have been working on in my mind and on paper but haven't had much chance to realize materially.
The first work is an extension of the Hanging Drawing series but using a man's shirt as the raw material. The shirt is deconstructed along the lines of the seams and the resulting lines are used to make a series of hanging drawings.
A version of the hanging drawing line came to 1 Saville Row and I am using the space to test out ideas around an extended drawing that navigates the space, emanating from two shelves situated in the store window.
Finally, I am continuing some smaller drawings on board that operate in a series, set in a metal filing shelf...probably not the best description. If the paint is dry tomorrow, I'll put it together and include a photo here.
One of my Bath friends stopped by for lunch and took a look at the work in progress. She encouraged me to work close to the window so people would notice me, possibly call the Bath Chronicle to get them to write an article. I tried to explain that I am more interested in engagement on a more subtle level. Not through advertisement but rather the casual passerby just noticing.
In observing my own process and writing, I realized an important part of it all for me is a kind of state of high alertness but in a relaxed way. I'm not quite sure when the art will arrive. I want to stay alert so I don't miss it. But in order for it to arrive I have to relax and let it happen. In some way, I hope my process and resulting work will invite the beholder to also be reminded that wonder can occur at any moment if we are aware.
