Bath Storefront Project: 1 Saville Row
June 2-16, 2009

Day 3:
Investigations continue. Different forms of physical drawing. Using various materials, I am interested in always allowing a sense of contingency, the elements in a temporarily fixed but still indeterminant state.

As I approach this residency, I am aware of moving slowly with a desire to pay attention to clues from the place, the materials and from within. While working in a semi-public situation (some passersby notice the work and my presence, others are oblivious), I am aware of an instinct to make things "look good" contrasting with a desire to move with lightness and let things unfold.

The following quote speaks to my desire to notice what I "agree to attend to" during this time:

"...millions of items of the outward order are present to my senses which never properly enter my experience. Why? Because they have no interest for me. My experience is what I agree to attend to. Only those items which I notice shape my mind--without selective interest, experience is an utter chaos. Interest alone gives accent and emphasis, light and shade, background and foreground--intelligible perspective..." (Williams James, Principles of Psychology)

I realized on the first day that the closest bathroom is across the walk at the Assembly Rooms which were built in the late 1700's and used for elegant entertaining in Georgian society. In the freebies card rack, I spotted a beautiful postcard of the Ballroom, walls all cream and seafoam. I picked up a few cards thinking to share them with friends. Once back at the storefront, I was curious to imagine the Hanging Drawing line in that elegant space so I made a few drawings. A friend stopped by to meet me for lunch and, viewing the drawings on the cards, assumed I had done an installation in the Assembly Rooms in Bath and began to ask me about the experience.
