Bath Storefront Project: 1 Saville Row
June 2-16, 2009

Day 4:
More willing to be visible to the public passing by, I moved the Hanging Drawing line more emphatically into the window. The line rests in piles on the two shelves and also stretches into the space, navigating an arch trim, across the floor and toward the back of the space. The piles of line imply potential drawings. The immediate response is engagement. More people look into the window as they walk by. Those sitting in the cafe just across the walkway watch with greater interest.

The four drawings on the Assembly Rooms postcards from yesterday seem too small an exploration so I retrieve more cards and continue the series imagining the Hanging Drawing line installed in the grand Ballroom of the Assembly Rooms, navigating the various architectural details and the massive central chandelier. As I make the drawings, quick conceptual installations, I became more familiar with the space represented in the image. I then went over to see the actual space but there was a concert in progress so I couldn't get in today.

I posted the drawings in the window in the style of real estate properties for sale or let. More people stop to study them.

Meanwhile, I continued to work with the Hinged Line piece, trying to figure out where it was headed. As with so much of my work, at the start it feels ridiculous and I have to fight to stay with it. With this piece, I had the sense of listening to a child who speaks inadequately and in fragments. Still, I try to listen intently, sure there is some meaning being conveyed, perhaps yet undeveloped. If I don't listen to the work at this humble stage, it may never come to fruition.
