Day 7:
The first drawing has been "claimed." It was a slight shock to see it missing from the front step. I am curious to know what happened but also enjoy the mystery. This work is a metaphor for the way in which art is experienced in ways we can never know - possibly disregarded or cherished.
Aware that my days at the storefront are waning, I decided to begin again. The Hanging Drawing line was removed. The letterform drawing peeled off the front window. But the shelves remained, calling for contents.
I have been working on ideas around hinged forms over the past year so I continued with that work, making several versions and testing out their various configurations. It's becoming clear that animating forms is a strong interest. Even the (Un)Claimed Drawings are not static. The completion of the work requires action.
I also worked on making more small drawings on board to continue to put works on the doorstop.
A visit from my neighbor, the London dealer, provoked another discussion about art. He stood before my hinged works, large and small, and with a raised eyebrow expressed his skepticism that people would be able to understand these objects were art. 'I don't mean to insult you, but they could look like simply building materials....The yellow painted bit helps. Maybe you should put a bit more paint on the small one.' I explain that the nature of the work is to sit on the edge between mere building materials and perhaps something more. He seems unconvinced but hangs around looking at the various works in progress.
