Bath Storefront Project: 1 Saville Row
June 2-16, 2009

Day 9:
Today I worked with the small drawings on board, working title Mutable Drawings. They are made by pouring paint and pushing it slightly to make forms, allowing the movement of the paint to find the final shape. I tested out various configurations, the idea being that there is no perfect format.

I also made a very modest adjustment to the Hinged Line pieces by adding a small element of paint to unite the two materials - metal hinge and wooden dowel. The paint needs to be thicker and more of a presence. I'll do another layer or two next week. I want it to operate like a third object.

Finally, I also added a swath of paint as a kind of wrapper around the two larger Hinged pieces. Again, hoping the paint will assert itself as another presence along with the wood and the hinges. Those elements are clearly distinct but the paint unites them.

As my time at the storefront comes down to the last few days, I am resisting the sense that it should all culminate neatly. This has been a good exploration. A rare opportunity in this time without a traditional studio to spread out and test some ideas.

The constant presence of the public has been interesting and also made me yearn for the solitude of a typical studio. Long hours alone, able to forget myself and go deeply into the work.
